Keyboard shortcut keys

Alt + Del does NOT permanently delete an item. It's shift + Del....so much for reliable source.

After you take a look at this video, please post your feedback, ideas for future improvements, or further thoughts on this topic.

Thanks,

I would rate this 0 but cannot as 1 is the minimum.

*There are 25 shortcuts not 30!
*What does "From the Windows desktop" for Alt + F4 (in a program) do?

I suggest you search Windows XP Help for "natural shortcuts" to get a better listing than this download.
You're right, there are only 25. We originally had 30, but shortened it to 25 to keep it on one page. Thanks for pointing that out. We've fixed the title now. And thanks for pointing out that one typo as well, which we'll also get fixed.

Of course, you're right about the Windows Help file providing some great shortcuts (many more than we've provided here), but the idea with this download is to put some of the best ones that administrators are most likely to use in a one-page, easy-to-print document.

This is still not quite accurate. You really only show 24 shortcuts and then add a means of adding additional shortcuts.

I have to admit, this was a disappointing article. It's nice to see these conveniently listed in one place, but there are better ways to do it.

Lastly, it's too bad the HTML content in the newsletter wasn't changed to reflect the proper total, too.
Thanks for taking the time to post your feedback. You mentioned that there are better ways to handle this. If you post some suggestions we'll be glad to consider them when we update this download in the future.

If you can provide the local URL to the windows keyboard shortcut page(s) from Windows Help, you wouldn't require download and it's always locally available as a link/shortcut.

That to me would be more professional. Reuse existing data. Avoid unecessary download/virus transmitter, etc...
Personally, I very much appreciated the listing. Though I was familiar with the vast majority of the 24, 25, 30, 50, or however many there were, I appreciated the ones I didn't know - and my objective was learning new shortcuts, not determining whether or not I was shortchanged by five or two or one shortcuts on a list that was provided for me courtesy of my membership in the TechRepublic Forums.

Thank you, and I'll look forward to more. Though I had no problem with your chosen format, either, if I was to recommend any change, that recommendation would be to put the listing in a more condensed listing format (however that might be).

Thanks again!

Ctrl +S
rrifkind@... 7th Jun 2005
The actual function of Ctrl+S (according to my Word Help) is to open the Insert Symbol Window. This list shows to shortcuts for saving current document one of which is in error: Shift +F12 is correct while Ctrl+S is incorrect. This brings all into question.

Check out my Word 2003 help's link: http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/hfws.aspx?AssetID=HP051866641033&CTT=1&Origin=EC010227221033&QueryID=2vY7Htujn&respos=1

Ctrl-S in Word has been Save for decades and is common to many applications, from Word and Excel to Notepad. That was the point of my posting: all those keystrokes have been around for that long in many applications.

What version of Word do you have? Are you sure you're not operating in WordPerfect mode and your keystrokes aren't reassigned? I can't find anywhere in the help that there's any keystroke for Insert Symbol.
I am not sure of the description for Alt+F4 (from a program). It should have been 'Closes the program' or something. But the description reads 'From the Windows desktop'...unless I am not reading it correctly...Just wanted to bring it up anyways....

Version control
GregH Updated - 19th May 2005
It's a pet peeve of mine in testing, but I hate when people try to make a quick correction and re-use the same version control number. You might consider utilizing the version numbering you have in the upper right corner. Or is that just for decoration?

My answer may be in the postings but... What is that quartered box in the keys mentioned? Someone else mentioned the "windlows logo key" in a message, and I guess that is what it is, but still, this means nothing to me.

It's on the left of the Alt key on most keyboards. But it's missing from some keyboards, especially on laptops.

Handy Article

Thanks for this great service. I made several copies to pass out to my associates.
As an IT professional I used to think of your site as a resource for job postings. I'll be back for more resources now.

ALT +
jkstill@... 1st Jun 2005
A good addition to this might be ALT + which brings up a window menu.

This of course allows you to move and/or resize the window. This is quite useful when a window pops up off screen due to a resolution change or change from multihead to single monitor as happens with laptops.

Come on, Jason, how can you miss all these?? We all know about Alt-underlined letters, but...

GENERAL
-------

F1: Help

F2: Rename

F5: Refresh

F10: Open the menu

CLIPBOARD
---------

Ctrl-Insert: copy

Shift-Delete: cut

Shift-Insert: paste

LISTS OF NAMED OBJECTS, e.g., files in Explorer
-----------------------------------------------

Some letters: move to first object whose name begins with those letters

To the following you can add Shift to select from the current object onward rather than just move:

Home/End: first/last object

PageUp/PageDown: object one screenful back/forward

Arrows: next object in that direction

TREEVIEWS, e.g., the Folder window in Explorer
----------------------------------------------

NumPad +: Expand one level

NumPad -: Collapse one level

NumPad *: expand all levels

Left arrow: Back to parent, another one to collapse it

Right arrow: expand one level, another to move to first child

DOCUMENT WINDOWS IN AN MDI APPLICATION
--------------------------------------

Alt-hyphen: opens a document window's control box

Ctrl-F4: closes a document window

To the following and also Alt-Tab and Alt-Esc, you can add Shift to cycle backwards:

Ctrl-F6 or Ctrl-Tab: cycles among document windows. Note: In applications like Word with floating dialog boxes like Find/Replace, use Ctrl-Tab to switch between Find/Replace and the active document; use Ctrl-F6 to cycle among documents.

F6: cycle among a document window's panes

DIALOG BOXES
------------

Tab: cycles focus among controls -- add shift to cycle backwards

Space: click a button or toggle a checkbox

Alt-Down: drop down a list

Alt-Up: collapse a drop-down

Arrows: choose one radio button in a group

Enter: click the default button, with the darker outline than others, usually OK

Esc: click the Cancel/Close button

TEXT
----

Ctrl-Backspace: Delete previous word

Ctrl-Delete: Delete next word or to end of line

Insert: Toggle insert and overwrite modes

To all the following you can add Shift to extend the selection rather than move the cursor:

Home/End: beginning/end of line

Ctrl-Home/End: beginning of text/file

PageUp/PageDown: one screen/page up/down

Ctrl-PageUp/PageDown: to beginning/end of text/file or top/bottom of screen

Up/Down: one line up/down

Ctrl-Up/Down: beginning/end of paragraph

Left/Right: previous/next character

Ctrl-Left/Right: previous/next word
Ctl+Shift+Space - Inserts non-breaking space, keeping word groups together
Ctl+Shift+hypen (or CTL+_) - Inserts a non-breaking hyphen, keeping part no's and hyphenated words togther
Perhaps there was a keystroke omitted in the Lock Computer command. If somebody knows the correct command, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

When writing in a large document, like a book and you cannot be bothered to keep scrolling to the end to edit; Ctrl+End will get to the end of that document.

Is there a keyboard to control sound, ie, mute, on or off, whatever?
