No it can't, not really. It will display the page if it is served with the improper MIME-type of "text/html". Notice I said, "Internet Explorer still doesn't know how to cope with XHTML *served properly*", which would be with the MIME-type of "application/xhtml+xml"
XHTML has no reasonable use or need on the WWW at this time.
