I'm researching blog sites that middle school students can use. The teachers want a blog that the public can make comments on, but they also want some control over what gets posted before it goes live. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Don't forget that you are talking to World Wide Web (community)
What sort of control? Parental? Who supervises then?
Typical Blogs allow the "owner" to ammend or delete comments, but these are done after the fact.

Here in the USA school systems decided that the difference in maturity between high school freshmen and high school seniors was creating problems. They decided to put 9th grade into a different environment. We used to have elementary school as grades Kindergarten through 6th grade, junior high school as grades 7 and 8, and high school as grades 9 through 12. Now middle school is grades 7 through 9.
As for the request for information, I think that if you want any real control over a web site then you have to run the web site yourself. The school should hire some skilled person to set up a web site for the school.

Thank you Stress Junkie for the description of middle school (actually for my school it's grades 6-8 but same idea).
The thought about hosting a blog on our school server has occurred to me too, but I was hoping someone else had already developed blogging software specifically for schools (to save me from doing it).
For Kiltie - I'm aware that typical blogs allow the owner to have control over comments after the fact but I was hoping for something developed specifically for schools that would allow a teacher to have control before the post goes live.

Yeah. When I hear about forms in British schools I have no idea what that means. Well here in the USA it's pretty simple. Most children start school at 4 or 5 years of age in kindergarten. The name kindergarten is taken from German and means "children's garden". Each grade is a given year in the sequence K, 1 through 12. Most people graduate high school when they are 17 or 18 years old. That marks the end of state funded education. People can then enter college or trade school if they can pay for it themselves or take their chances as unskilled labor. Many colleges offer reduced tuition or partial funding through scholarschip grants based on financial need, but for many people higher education is as inaccessible as it was in the days of Charles Dickens.

Wordpress and Movable Type both allow the moderation of comments before they go live. If you are looking for a hosted solution Typepad has that feature as well.
Some of the more advanced content management systems allow one person to moderate everything that gets posted if that is what you are looking for.

If your school creates a closed LinkedIn group within http://www.linkedin.com you have as an owner full control over the following (creator is automatically owner with super control) :
- Who are managers (almost the control of owner except e.g. delete group)
- Who are moderators
- Who can become a normal member/participant
Groups can easily be used as if they are blogs. As a teacher/pricipal you're supposed to be smart enough to know how,
