Letter of Recommendation for tech challenged employee

Recently I've let one of my helpdesk people go. He is very easy going, punctual and works well with people. He tries to do the right thing and is a team player. Unfortunately after two years working and training him, he is just technically challenged. We had an honest relationship and I've tried to steer him away from technology.

He asked me to write him a letter of recommendation for another tech job he is applying to. I'm not sure how to write one without misleading the reader or writing one about poor performance. How would you write one? Are there templates I can follow?

You basically said it already...
"He is very easy going, punctual and works well with people. He tries to do the right thing and is a team player."

In a letter of recommendation, you can bring out the positive points to him as a person and his work and not be misleading. Nothing says you have to state his technical abilities. That is his responsibility in his resume.

I would also check with your companies policies on recommendation letters. My company does not allow management to give recommendation letters or even be a reference. We give a number where employment will be verified.
