Lost Data with Windows XP home over XP pro

Hello, I recently installed Windows XP Home over an existing version of XP Pro. Before installing, it warned me that some of the My Documents files, etc. could be lost. It appears that everything is gone, including program files, etc. It must still be on the hard drive somewhere. Can anyone send me to a link with info on how to recover my data and programs?

Thanks

Lost Data with Windows XP home over XP pro
If you formatted your drive....most old files will be toast. If not, you may revive with some desktop searching. Go to "Start" and click on search....asumming you know names of some of the files.

Need to Backup
Need I say anything about backing up your files before reinstalling an operating system!! You might try a program called File Scavenger, I've used it to recover numerous files.

Next time, try overwriting your Windows operating system with something more useful, like Ubuntu Linux.

I'm sure Noake will be greatly helped, or at least comforted, by your proselytization.

I used a program called PC Inspector Smart Recovery to retrieve files from a formatted memory card, managing to recover quite a few.
However, once I allowed Windows to ?clean up? one of my hard drives ? everything was wiped out and nothing could be recovered.

Gone forever
Since Home is NOT an upgrade for Pro, reformatting was required. If changing from NTFS to Fat32 or vice a versa was done and files were over written (New OS was installed) means Gone Forever.

Even when u install Pro over Home... Gone forever anyway... even keeping same NTFS.
Really don't know why it happens, but I was luck because I consult the support and stopped the installation.

Those files are, as a band so elequently put it, "Dust in the Wind". You may remember those files, but they are gone and nothing you try will bring them back. I've worked with several computers that have had different operating systems installed over the one that was previously there, certain files were lost and I could not find any way to get them back. Ahhh! If only a simple back-back up would have been done. *especilly when the original OP had been WinXP Pro.

Why?
I'm curious, why did you replace Pro with Home?

Another Trick to Try
You might try a product called UNDELETE by Active (www.active-undelete.com) I've used this to recover data from drives that have been reformatted & even repartitioned!
Good luck!
