Hi Mentors,
Thanks to TechRepublics help I have
a shot at Booting my XP media center
edition by making a start up disk with my XP home edition off my laptop.The directions by Greg Shultz
about the ten things when won't boot,
say to go to c:drive root directory
and click and copy:Boot.ini,NTLDR,
Ntdetect.com then put this disk in broken desktop and it sounds like it
might work. I tryed yesterday to make the disk and could not find the root directory on c:drve. Is xp home edition have a root directory with the above 3 items I need?
I need to know if xphome will work and how to find the root directory.
I am just learning about computers, eager to learn, and appreciate all your help.

The Root Directory
is the home directory of the OS files, or c:\windows (unless it was renamed).

P.S. -- it may be a hidden folder, or the files may be hidden. Set explorer not to hide files, even OS files
open explorer -- tools -- folder option -- view
select 'show hidden files and folders'
and uncheck both 'hide extensions for known types' and 'hide protected operating system files'

you have to...
go to folder options in my computer and change the default settings.
Go to tools, folder options, view, and then click "show hidden and systme files."

start up disk
Hi people,
I figured out how to get to the root directory and make a start up disk, after reading all your postings. Computer still did not start. I am going to use an IDE drive to USB adapter cord and power supply
and try to download my files from broken desktop to my laptop.Then replace hard drive into desktop and do a recovery and reload my files. I hope it works!This is a learning crash course experience in troubleshooting. I am starting to get the hang of looking in my program files now,
