I have several posts on several site and forums because I am having a problem. Would you mind seeing if you can help me?

"I just built my machine. Installed Win XP Pro, added some stuff, got a brain fart and deleted the asp.net user under the user profiles in control panel. Now pc doesn't boot into win. I don't want to reinstall as I'm afraid I'll loose stuff."

I can't even boot into safemode. If there is something else I should be trying, plz give me a clue!

I just wanted to by-pass the having to select a profile to use at start up. Is crying allowed?
I'm at my wits end. I downloaded a boot disk but it's not working either.

Try a restore
I've done this a few times and it's fixed various problems for me. Boot of your XP disk, then instead of installing a new instilation of XP select 'repair', this might identify a default user is missing and resolve the issue.

I finally put my 40 gig in as a master and made the 80 a slave thinking that I could get what I wanted off of the other one. I've done this many times in the past. In fact, I normally have 2 HDs with 2 partions each.
The strangest thing is that no matter how I jumper them or cable them I can only see the 40 gig HD through Windows and it's label F:!
When I boot up I can see both HDs. On the F8 boot menu I see both HDs. I've never had this happen before.
Got any suggestion out there for a fix for that?

Here's a good utility
I guess this site has a beautiful utility which can really help you boot your computer. Try madboot and boot into Windows XP Pro. Let us know your results. You need to make a bootable floppy disk from this utility and then boot from it.

Speaking to your posts, what I infer is that ASP.NET user doesn't have anything to do with booting your computer. It's something else related to it like the Norton etc you talked about. But yes, it's always preferable to create a restore point before deleting any such profile or doing some unknown but suspected stuffs. Personally speaking, I don't like Norton as it intercepts with the MBR and may result in crashing of the system. I already have had a crash with Norton Antivirus few years back and now I am on McAfee successfully.

I'm getting a lot of negative feedback on Norton. I've used it for years, but it's getting too controling!

If you can see the 80G HDD in boot option then before going for a boot, try autodetecting HDDs in BIOS Setup options, then in the setup again, test your HDD using SMART test or whatever HDD test your BIOS provides. If all's well, then you are safe. Now proceed further to do a repair on first boot record as stated in this site:

However, madboot is a good utility in that it provides a lot of tools, virtual cd driver, many boot options for all windows OSs etc. It's more than just a bootable disk/CD. It's advisable to keep such utilities with you as a backup, you never know when you may need them.

Thanks for responding.
HD has been showing up through BIOS all along. I don't have an option for SMART testing in BIOS. I don't see any option in there for testing the HD.

But i dont see the point as we know the hdd is registering any way.Plug the drive into another cpu as the slave ,back up your data and do a fresh install

I don't know which fix worked, maybe the last repair through the console. At any rate, it working fine. Now my issue is IP related. I think it's some security setting in Win XP. The Road Runner tech just left. He could do nothing! My laptop connects just fine, so it's not the cable modem. My machine will not renew or even assign an IP address. The generic IP of 169., so on, is the only IP that shows up. No firewall, have reset winsock, reset IP stack, everything that I know to do...nothing doing! The tech said he's seen several new PCS do the same thing, their equipment is working fine. I just know it's an XP Pro setting. What else could it be? The on board ethernet card is working fine. Anybody out there found the same or similar?

another pc.Are you sure you have an active connection on that line.The only other way is a firewall.Check in lan settings to see if automatically detect settings is ticked or wheather you need to specify a proxy

I have often deleted the asp.net account with no implications.Have you sp2 installed?

sp2 installed then you could have a virus or a trojan.

hdd into another computer as a slave off the network, and retrieve all your data from the drive,back it up onto cd ,do the fresh install on the hdd in your own system and restore your data.Scan the disk before you restore with an antivirus and dont put the computer back on any network with out sp2 and a good anti virus installed
