Eventually
What will have to be done is to call MS and try to activate it. I doubt it though but it's worth a try.

Whatever you do, Don't get a Phony Key
You could probably get a phony key, but that would cause you greater problems than you have now.
The answer is to Call Microsoft Directly and explain yourself.
Offer to shoot them a copy of your receipt if necessary etc.
Tell them where and when you bought the PC.
Did you Buy the XP_OS yourself? or was it included with a Computer Purchase?
In which case I would return it to the vendor and pay for a reload.
Sorry, but this is the best I can do for you under the circumstances.
Remember, you could always pick up a phony number but in the end it WILL brand you as
a thief in Microsoft's eyes.
Then you might as well throw away your XP CD and start all over again.
So no matter how tempting, go the long route. It will be worth it in the end.
Wish I could better but the answer is to call Redmond, explain yourself and get a new number.

Aaron
PS
I'll try to come back with a phone no.
Good Luck

The Box
Hi,
I might be trying to teach you how to suck eggs, but have you looked all over the computer case?
XP usually has removable stickers with the key, which should be stuck on the outside of the case.

I haven't seen a Dell yet that didn't have the Serial number stuck on the side of the tower somewhere.
I've always thought this was foolish as it's in plain view, but what are you going to do?
That's Dell for you.
