SQL Server Transaction Log Large & Simple Recovery Model

I have a database that is in Simple Recovery mode and yet the Transaction log is very large - over 1 Gb and larger than the database. There is no concurrent sessions. I ran Checkpoint. Is there any danger in truncating the transaction log after a full backup? BTW, auto shrink option is NOT selected in the database options.
