Need some advice, have been out of this part of the business for a couple of years, now tasked with upgrading the hardware of a small company's PDC.
Just want to make sure I have my thought process correct. New server hardware is in.
My plan is to configure the new hardware as a BDC on the network, transfer over any shared applications (only 2) and DHCP - then demote the existing PDC and promote the new hardware.
Sound simple enough? Both are W2K servers - 8 users total, applications I'm not worried about - just the AD.
Please - all advice is appreciated as soon as possible.

Are you removing the original DC
if you are, you need to do a couple of things. You need to configure the new server with DNS and have it replicate the zone with the existing DC. Once this is in place, install the new server as an additional DC in existing domain, wait for this to finish.
Then, yes you are correct, transfer over your apps, shared folders, DHCP and any other services you need. Once thats done, demote the original server, and this will transfer all the remaining FSMO roles over to the new DC, and you should be fine. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I was thinking of keeping the old server as a backup in a BDC role, the new hardware the primary of course.
I admit ignorance, but to demote the original server on a pure W2K network, is dcpromote still the method? And if so, where within the Management tools might this now be? Looking through all the posts on the internet - in W2K are there still the BDC and PDC roles - or just replicated PDC's?
Hope not too nubie a question ...
