XP/Vista dual boot , then re-installed XP and lost dual boot option

My laptop came w/ XP and I partitioned hard drive and dual booted Vista, no problems. Had for about a month and re-installed XP and now lost dual boot option. Still see my Drive D with vista but not sure what direction to go to get the dual boot option up so I can load vista?

Vista's Installation DVD has repair tools that should resolve the issue, plus their tools are much easier to use than are those associated with Windows XP.

I had similar problem and when booting from the Vista DVD it found and offered to fix the problem without any input from me.

I have been running Vista from the time it was beta> Install XP on your master HD and Vista on your Slave HD. At boot up you will be asked to boot from Early windows or from legacy which is vista. make sure your volumes on each HD have different letters. i found that booting them from the same drive creates network/security issues. Vista is on IPV6 and XP is IPV4. LOL.

In this day and age of free virtual software why dual boot?
Seriously, VM Ware and Microsoft both have free virtualization software for you to run multiple OS on the same PC without trashing your system, so why do it?

Virtualization is not as fast as dual booting, it is running under another running operating system, besides your hardware is sometimes better then what the virtual system uses as it's hardware..if I was running Linux I might run it under VIrtualization software, but not 1 like Windows, especially for a system I wanted to use regularly..

Performance issues. Hardware issues, etc.

Try OSX in a VM and see. I find XP performance acceptable in a VM.

XP/VISTA Dual boot
Hi there had the same issue, i discovered that you need to re-install xp first then re - install vista.

as it will not recognise your vista hdd or setup your dual boot aain unless you do the above re - install.

Vista MUST use its boot manager which is not the same as the BM that XP uses.

Start Vista from the CD, go to the repair options and fix the MBR (reinstall the Vista BM). Then either edit the Vista boot manager or else get a boot manager like the one mentioned above.

first? I had the same problem and used BCDedit
and, I don't remember how I did it, but

I lost my dual boot between Vista and XP. The solution for me is Microsoft Knowledge base article: KB919529. Watch the drive designations - I used the Disk Management drive letter assignments and it cam right up.

Dual Boot Issue with Vista & Older OS
I ran into the same problem, and after reading all of the posts, MS bulletin, and suggestions for third party freeware, I have a much simpler solution.

Put Vista disc in drive, reboot. Run the Repair option, then select startup. That fixes Vista. Next, boot to Vista Windows, insert XP CD, explore CD, copy NTDETECT & NTLDR to the root directory of the HD that XP is installed on. Works like a champ!

Lost Dual Boot to Vista when Updated XP
All you have to do is cold boot from your Vista CD and do not check the Register box.
Then when you get to the options, Choose "Repair my Computer". The CD will look for and find your existing Vista installation and will automatically fix it.
Note: it is a good idea to have your Vista Drive letter also carry the word Vista, ie; G: Vista, because when I did this it gave me the wrong letter but still fixed the dual boot. Good Luck, Grant Bobbitt, PLS
