What is 10/100 Network Adapter?

It may seem like a silly question but what exactly is this part for?
Is it only for dial up internet connection with modem or Broadband or can it help facilitate local networking of 2 or more machines.
I always get confused on this one so any info much appreciated.

The network adaptor
Is used for connecting to other network hardware or computers

Almost all dial up Internet connections use a modem not a network adaptor

Some modems are controlled over a network

A network can be 2 or more computers

The Internet is a very large network with links that use network adaptors

Networks do not always use network adaptors

Computers can be connected to a network by their modems, com ports, USB ports LPT ports etc

They do not have to use network adaptors

The 10/10 is speed of the network adaptor

Modems can be connected by COM ports, USB ports, LPT or Printer ports

They can be internal or external

There is a lot more info on networks all over the internet

It is a very big subject

But can be a lot of fun to learn about

I hope this helps
You seem like a home-user, so I am going to assume that this 10/100 Network Adapter is an Network Interface Card (NIC). Basically you plug an RJ-45 CAT5 or CAT6 (a fat phone cord) into the slot on the NIC and plug the other end into another network device, usually a modem or some sort of switch. You can't plug it directly into another machine unless you get a special cable called crossover cable.

So basically if you want to connect to another computer then you either need a switch/router (the best way if you want multiple computers connected to one internet connection) or you can directly network them together with the crossover cable. There are actually other ways of sharing network connections but they are typically more difficult to setup.

You should research home networking to find some networking solutions.
