How to repair a PDF

Hi,
I am having a problem trying to open a PDF file. Ever time I attempt to open, Adobe Reader loads, but displays a rather cryptic error message:

There was an error opening this document. Access denied.

It's not a case of permissions, as I have administrative permission and can open all other PDFs on the server.

I cannot copy it or move it and it is being skipped over by the backup server.

All of this suggests to me that the file has become corrupted. Can anyone suggest a way of recovering this file without paying an outside vendor or using licensed software?

It looks like there may be some file permissions set.
However, you may try sumatra PDF viewer.

here is the portable version.
http://portableapps.com/apps/office/sumatra_pdf_portable

I have had limited success opening pdf's that adobe could not with this app.

Let me know how it works.

Thanks

Many thanks faradhi for the suggestion. However, when I attempt to open the file, it is giving an "Error loading PDF file" message, (it can open other PDFs fine).

I have to say that it's very frustrating that Adobe doesn't give any sort of reason for the error.

I have had times where Adobe cannot open files that do not follow strict adherence to the PDF format.

Sometimes cheaper PDF converters will not know how to handle an element and malformed the file.

Acrobat is very unforgiving. I really have developed a dislike of Acrobat over the years.

What verson of Acrobat reader do yo use?
the latest version of Acrobat is 8, and some files that are saved in this format cannot be read by older versions. There is also a version 8 reader (free) on the Adobe site that you may need to use.

Now if the person that created the pdf set password permissions, then you must contact the owner to have fixed so you can view.

Let me know.

My PC uses version 8.1 of Adobe, but I've also tried versions 6.0 and 7.0. None have been able to open the document.

The title, author, subject and keywords are all blank. It also suggests that the version is 0.0. They are no previous versions available either.

Hi,
did u shut off all the asscess? but from your problem, it seems the pdf files were got currupted. You may try a popular PDF file recovery tool called Advanced PDF Repair to repair your PDF file. It is a powerful tool to repair corrupt or damaged PDF files.Detailed information about Advanced PDF Repair can be found at http://www.datanumen.com/apdfr/

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/apdfr/apdfr.exe

Don't bother to download the free demo. It shows you absolutely ZILCH! On top of that it installs to your program files and registry in order to try the worthless demo out. Fat lot of effort for nothing.
If 'Advanced PDF Repair' is any good, they're not showing it on their demo.

Wanna say thanks to STEVENKBEARD.
Hey STEVENKBEARD.
I just wanna thank you that you helped me indirectly. Actually from last 3 weeks I was dealing with the problem of PDF corruption. I couldn't access my PDF files as they were badly corrupted. Although I tried those manual steps which you have written over there but they were not good. So ultimately I used that tool which you have mentioned there. It is really good. It really recovered my whole PDF file. I'm very thank to you.God bless you.
