I have been asked to change the local administrative rights on a laptop, (that runs XP) to conform with the company LAN. Unforntunately no one knows what the old local admin password was.
Is there a way that the domain admin can reset the password for the local admin? The only way I can think of is by formatting the disk and reinstalling windows. There has to be a better way.
This laptop is need for off-site work so it's important that I can do this.

Yes, Domain admin rules all
If you login as the domain admin, just right-click on "My Computer", click "Manage", expand "Local Users and Groups", click on "Users", right-click on "Administrator", click "Set Password", click "Proceed", and type in the new password a couple times and click ok.
Log out of the domain administrator account, and log in to the local computer with the local administrator account.
Log out of the domain administrator account, and log in to the local computer with the local administrator account.

Domain administrator should be able to rest the password
Log on to tha machine under a domain administrator account and reset the local account.
Or use Computer Management to remotley connect to the machine, again using DOmain Administrator credentials, and change the local admin account under
Computer Management | System Tools | Local Users and Groups | Users.
Right click on Adminstrator and select RESET PASSWORD.
You will usually get a warning that reseting the password could cause problems. e.g. if you are using Hard Drive Encryption.
Click on Proceed and enter the new password as prompted.
