For Windows and Linux
For Windows:

Access the local area connection by clicking Start > Programs > Settings > Control Panel > Network Connections> Local Area Connection
Click Properties button
Double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Click Advanced button
Click Add button in the IP addresses section of the IP Settings tab
Enter a proper IP address (for example, 10.1.200.40) and Subnet Mask (for example, 255.255.255.240), then click Add
Click OK to close the Advanced TCP/IP Settings property sheet
Click OK to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) property sheet
Click OK to close the Local Area Connection property sheet
