WORD and EXCEL 2003 - Slow responding when opening

Is there a way to speed up the response time when WORD and /or EXCEL open? If I doulble click either type of file, e.g. from My Documents, it can take almost a minute to open.

Once the first one is open, if I use File/Open
for the next file, the response time is OK.
