connect tablet to an already networked PC via crossover cable?

I have an XP Pro machine wired to a home network using the motherboard RJ45 jack. I also installed a PCI ethernet card. I have a tablet PC running Win XP tablet version. When I connect the tablet to the desktop with a crossover cable via the ethernet card, the tablet says it's connected at 100MB, the desktop says the connection failed, AND the desktop loses the internet connection via the onboard RJ45 jack. I have to restore the system to an earlier point to get the internet connection back. I tried letting the machines find their own settings, and I tried setting the tablet to 192.168.1.42 (desktop is ...1.41) and Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0. Same results. (I have successfully connected the laptop and desktop via infrared but I want a more powerful connection.)

Is this setup workable? How? Thanks!

are they on the same workgroup,
can you ping the desktop from the laptop.

Have run the connection wizard on the laptop and save the file, and then run it on the desptop?
