I have regularly receiving helpdesk cases from users who report that they can't see the USB drive on one particular machine, and ask to have that particular machine to be repaired.
The problem is Windows mounts the USB to the first available 'local' drive letter. If there is a network share on this letter, Windows XP will use it anyway for the new USB drive because since XP network shares are specific to the current user and not visible in the context of the system where the letter is assigned. The USB drive then appears to be invisible.
I would like to know if there is anyway I can make Windows to assign USB a drive letter other those being used by the network share without using any third party utility. Or how to tell Windows to always ignore certain drive letters being used as the default network share within the company.

Open explorer and create a new folder. Something like USB. Insert the Memory stick. Open Computer Management, Disk Management and right click on the removable disk. Select Change Drive Letter and Paths. Here you can select a Drive Letter of choice by clicking Change, Select Add. Navigate to the folder and Select it and press OK. From now on when you insert the Memory stick you will have a copy of the contents in the new folder.
