I have recently experienced a dialog box popping up, telling me it's preparing to delete the 'My Documents' folder. Of course I've not done this myself - is it a virus?
I've also noticed the Windows Installer booting up on occasion too, but I always shut both of these down before they can do anything (I hope!)
I use XP Pro and have virus protection via my ISP, Virgin.

God it could be anything with no AV product in place locally
How about backing up all your Data grabbing the Recovery Disc/s and wiping the HDD before reloading the OS and resetting the system but this time use AVG Free AV Product.

Do Not rely on an ISP to provide Virus Protection as they can't. At best they will limit your number of infections to only the really nasty ones that destroy either your Data or in a worst Case Scenario your Freedom by either turning you into a Kiddy Porn Provider the worst kind of Criminal or someone hosting a Move Download site that gets picked up by the Copyright owner who wants to be compensated for their losses.
Either way it's going to cost you lots and possibly not only your freedom but your ability to work at some places like Government Departments or Schools in the future. Registered Sex Offenders generally speaking are not well liked by the General Community.

I did use AVG for a long time, up until recently. I had to expunge it as it was taking up so much memory, my PC was taking nearly 40 minutes to boot up. I'm now reluctant to reinstate AVG.
I'm not an IT professional, just an average home user and nervous about wiping my drive. However, I am grateful for your advice and will read up on this a lot more in the hope of gaining the confidence to do just that.

try Avast. It is highly unadvisable to run without onboard antivirus, no matter what your ISP provides. Highly unadvisable. Also check into Spybot S&D, and AdAware SE. Both free packages that scan for spyware and adware.

I've used AVG for years (both free and pro versions) and never had it hog my resources like McAfee and Norton. I suspect that you either have a machine that is really old or you have other spyware/malware/crapware infections going on that is causing the boot time to be that long.
As Col suggested, a complete wipe and reload is probably worth the effort. Just remember to back up all your data because DBAN WILL DESTROY IT PERMANENTLY.
