GoogleMail Outlook password invalid..why??
I have my Outlook set up with my GoogleMail account. And I have never had any problems with it. I recently set it up to where the password has to be typed in upon start up, and exit (to send). Everything worked fine, and one day it stopped accepting my password. It says that it is invalid. I know this is the correct password, because I am still able to log into my Google.com account with it. I have tried everything I could to fix it, but it won't work. How can I get past this??

no, i'm not trying to get the password. I know my password, I'm not needing anything through GoogleMail...It's my Outlook. But I'm not all too familiar with Outlook, so I don't know how to take off the prompt where it asks to type in the password. I haven't ever posted here before. I did a google search for my question, and it led me to this site, but I couldn't actually get to any answers, so I made an account to ask on my own. I apologize if it seemed like I was trying to be fradulent. I just want to be able to use my Outlook again, instead of having to go through my web browser and log in everytime and refresh to get my emails.

it might be worth re-reading the original post.
"I know this is the correct password, because I am still able to log into my Google.com account with it."
His problem is with Outlook.

Try it yourself. Log into Manage My Account. Then look at the drop down choices for your State of residence. The only options for the Armed Forces are:
"Armed Forces Americas"
"Armed Forces Canada/Europe/Africa/MiddleEast"
"Armed Forces Pacific"
So, if they're somewhere in the world matching the middle choice, they've chosen the correct one.
Since that is a required field and MUST match the prefix for the phone number given (also required), they've done all they can to describe "their address".
Trust me. The two required fields must match when creating a new login.

It's also possible Hannah was stationed in or near GB at the time she got the GMail account, which is now GoogleMail for the rest of us. So, she gets to THWAP you on da forehead a second time!
Now, let's go get "one of our finest" some help for figuring out why she can't use Outlook to retrieve her GMail. It used to work. Now it doesn't.

As regards the Googlemail/Gmail item:
I'm not referring to the LOGO as it appears on the email account screen.
I'm referring to the actual designation of the email address: MY email account is, let's say,
oldmycroft@gmail.com
and I live in the UK. Had I not been a beta-tester for this upstart email provision when it first started and had waited until it went 'live', my email address would now be
oldmycroft@googlemail.com
This only happens (as far as I know) in the UK, and stems from some chancer who managed to BUY the domain (in Britain) before Google did. Apparently he held it hostage, hoping for a big score on the monetary front.
Needless to say - the ransom was never paid. Ergo the appearance of '@googlemail.com'. The beta-testers were left with their '@gmail.com' addresses and as the only ones in the UK to have them, are held in adoration by the rest of the minions (so I'm told).
Although quite why anyone with any sense would hold me in adoration has yet to be explained by anyone not accustomed to wearing a straitjacket!!

Why else would you be the first person I added to my contacts, once I discovered that feature?
It's because your intuition about someone is usually right on target and you're not afraid to tell 'em so. Add that to your knowledge of practically everything, especially some of the old technical stuff we've lived through, and you've got a combination that can't be beat. I like your style!
And yes, I understood what you were talking about (GMail vs GoogleMail). I was simply trying to point out that it's possible Hannah was a BETA tester too and therefore has a GMail account, not GoogleMail. After all, stranger things have happened, and we DO see a lot of questions about GMail coming from what seems to be all over the world. Were they all BETA testers too?

No-one else anywhere in the world can have an email that ends in @googlemail.com unless they created their email account from within a UK URL.
I get the impression I am being taken to task on this moot point, like someone having their proverbial chain 'yanked'!
...shouldn't have bothered making the point...

Also check which mail account/profile is set to default....
Outlook will be asking for the password of the default email account in the default profile. If GoogleMail IS set to be the default account, you'll have to call GoogleMail like Nepenthe0 said previously.

I just had an afterthought. Hannah, you said your email setup through Outlook used to work, then suddenly quit accepting your password to retrieve your GMail and that you know the password is ok because you can access GMail through the browser using the same password.
I don't know how you're accessing the internet, be it through an external ISP or through the base. No matter which it is, check with them. It's entirely possible they've made changes so that GMail can only be accessed through the browser.
This would be especially obvious if you're connecting through an external ISP. Most have been refusing to relay outgoing mail for quite some time, forcing people to use their SMTP server instead. They're now starting to refuse to relay mail on the inbound side as well. Since the external ISP's are beginning to block things, it's only logical the Gov't would be doing the same.
So, check with whoever is providing your internet access and see if they've made changes recently which would be affecting your ability to retrieve your GMail through Outlook.
And, one last thought. Is GMail (GoogleMail) now requiring that you put the entire email address in as the username? MSN and Hotmail do, so it's possible GMail does too. If they did make that change recently, did you change your email account in Outlook so that it sends the correct username (whole email address)?

I hadn't ever thought of that... The ISP that I use is a German one, not connectec to anything on post. As for the GMail requiring the full email address, I just tried that...no luck.

American Armed Forces with a British Gmail account ...
That seems slightly odd to me.
AND you can only be misfortunate enough to have a 'GoogleMAIL' id if you created the account within the confines of the UK.
Hardly what I'd expect of the American 'go anywhere' Armed Forces.
Never quite understood the point of listing your location as...'APO,xxx/xxx/xxx/xxx'. You're already anonymous on the internet, whjy go to the extra bother, when your email id says you're in the UK ??
On the point of not getting access - create another Googlemail account together with functional Outlook access, then forward all further incoming email from account #1 to account #2.

We don't use APO to conceal our whereabouts...It stands for "Army Post Office" and AE stands for "Armed Forces Europe" and they do that because they have their own postal system. It saves everyone a lot of money too, because it is used and charged just as any other stateside address. So instead of having to pay Euro at a European post office, and pay the international fees....you take something to an APO, and it wouldn't cost anymore to send some thing to New York than it would if you were in New Jersey...
oh, and I have a "gmail" account..I typed in GoogleMail because I didn't think there was a difference.

Thanks very much indeed for the detailed explanation of the bleeding obvious.
Your system is oddy similar to the BFPO system I used to use, but I never used that on an internet site since email is also free and a helluva lot faster.
You had better hope there isn't someone with the same name on Googlemail, or they'll be wondering why all their unexpected mail keeps arriving. The only UK residents with a Gmail account, like me, were originally Beta-testers. The rest have Googlemail accounts.

We just have to use it for signing up various things. if we use our European address, we automatically access the European versions of the site....Which poses language barriers.
As for the "googlemail" accounts as opposed to the "gmail" accounts, you can get them outside of the UK. We are quite some way from the UK, and haven't logged on through the UK google, but my husbands address comes up @googlemail.com while mine comes up @gmail.com

A stretch, but...
if you have the install disk - though it may or may not ask for it - try a Detect and Repair, from the Help menu. I go through a similar problem periodically, and that often helps, if it is not a problem at the ISP, or the mail servers.

Have you checked that Outlook hasn't had a tremor ...
I'll be honest with you - I don't like Outlook. I tried it for a couple of days (years ago) and thought it was a bit flaky and flighty.
Having said that, Gmail can be a tad awkward too on occasions.
Check that Outlook hasn't had a glitch in the setup, perhaps altering the certificates setting for SSL/SMTP. If this had changed you'd still be able to log into Gmail directly with the same credentials.
Also check the IMAP setting inside Gmail - I've had that change on its own before now.
And sorry for jumping on your initial Post. I misread the signs.

figured it out!....kind of.....
okay turns out that Germany (where I'm stationed) has gone to "googlemail" and no longer supports "gmail"...so i changed the email address in my outlook, and now i'm receiving my messages...now here's the big but....BUT....I still can't send...my SMTP is still smtp.gmail.com and i thought that might be it, because it still says gmail...but the incoming mail server is still pop.gmail.com and it's working...I see a light at the end of the tunnel here...but I'm not quite there yet.

You have to understand that Gmail and Googlemail are completely separate. Therefore changing the descriptor inside Outlook will have no beneficial effect whatsoever, unless it matches up with the nomenclature within the email account itself.
I advise that you log on to your email account DIRECTLY either via Google or by using http://gmail.com/mail/ and look at the Settings page.
If Germany has changed to Googlemail as you say, it shouldn't have any effect on a Gmail account, so check inside your email account via DIRECT access -forget Outlook for the moment- and see what the email account advises for setting up Outlook.

A big box of chocolates are en route to you in Germany.
I don't have the answer to your question, because I use Outlook Express for my e-mail, and my only experience with Outlook was a dismal month struggling with Vista Home Premium.
So please stick with the Forum until your problem is resolved. And enjoy the goodies.
