SQL Server rename Query

Have just purchased a new DB Server for the org. We intend to build/give this new DB server the same name and config as our current DB server once it has been de-commissioned and removed from the domain. Our DB Admin will then install and configure SQL on this box...Would be grateful if anyone out there has replaced an SQL server and what problems they ran into or what things we need to do from an SQL perspective before going live with new server.

PS..DB Administrator informs me that he knows what he is doing.. i have mt doubts ...as SQL is not my bag any info would be greatly appreciated.
