Unless you are running HijackThis, why ask? ...
Although I can think of one user that could do with a ComboFix being run on their personal cranial Registry. grin

Well I've personally never ever heard of it till you asked
Between Spy Bot S&D, Ad Aware, Advanced Windows Care I don't have a problem with this stuff.

But judging by the feedback left here

Quite a few people appeared to be happy with it till October the 16 at least.

I routinely clean heavily infected systems and ComboFix and Malware Bytes AntiMalware (MBAM) have eased the job considerably. ComboFix removes the nastiest of nasty adware/spyware and MBAM cleans the rest. MBAM by itself is very good and can be left on the customer's PC. ComboFix has a one week "shelf life" plus it needs to be uninstalled after use.

This is the best site for ComboFix instructions:

There are no commercial products which will remove some of the malware ComboFix does. Some of the Vundo variants disable AV and other malware removal software, prohibit software installation, and may not allow any software other than their malicious code to run. Try fixing those with normal tools.

It's a jungle out there.

ComboFix has a one week life -- aborts and pops up an error message that it is out of date. You'll need to download a copy as needed. Just bookmark the URL I provided.

age where you are. It is 65 over here before you are elegible for what we refer to as the Pension. grin

You are spot on with ComboFix. wink

Full retirement age for Social Security is 65, but you can elect to take early retirement at 62, which I fully intend to do. That will not be my only source of retirement income and I'll keep working on PCs as long as it interests me and I'm physically and mentally able to do so.

Bottom line is that I'm 61, a grandpa, still in good health, and don't think I'm losing my marbles quite yet.

you haven't lost anything as far as I can see. Only around 12 mths to go eh. I'm 12 years behind you and I'll share some info with you. At 74 years of age my father inlaw is still teaching IT. He is looking after a computer pod of 10 PC's connected to a file server which he gets me to look after but he services and maintains the workstations. He is a fine example of someone dedicated to IT and sharing that knowledge with others. No Mate I don't think that you will walk too far away from IT. But if you do keep up the appearances on TR as I know that I value your input. wink

ComboFix - its effectiveness depends on how you use it
ComboFix is very good for some very specific tasks. The problem is discovering what those tasks are. The "ComboFix Guide" is much too high level to help anyone understand how to use it. It drives users back to their website to wait for help. I have seen ComboFix quarantine many perfectly good program files and cause more problems than it fixed. Other times, it worked just fine and actually did fix something though it often does not tell you what it did.

So the bottom line is that it does fix some computer problems, it does create some computer problems, and it always increases website traffic.

If you don't follow previously detailed instructions that apply directly to your specific issue, it is highly recommended you use it only under the guidance of malware removal experts in malware removal forums.

If you can't manage to protect your system or have backups in the first place, you probably should not use powerful and specific tools such as combofix on your own. It's somewhat akin to your average user playing with heavy-duty registry scanners (or regedit) or a low-level disk editor without guidance.

Would you play around with your anti-lock brakes just because you happened to have a J-39177?
