What tools do i use to test LAN speed between computers?

I need to quantify and report the speeds between computers to see if the network is causing problems, and to test what new hardware has effect on increasing the speed.

What tools do I need to use to do this? Is it software, or is it hardware, or both?

I would like to measure bandwidth, latency, throughput and if possible, quality of connections.

Thanks.

If you have Cisco Switches its all in their
More current Cisco Switches have that type of reporting ability built in. You can pull down bandwidth reports in line and bar graph charts and you can monitor specific ports and nodes.

If you don;t have Cisco and your switches do not have that ability. You will need some network monitoring software. Such as;

http://www.paessler.com/info/network_monitor

Their are a wide variety of options to choose and you will need to look at the products to determine what you want to use for your needs.

Software via SNMP
We use SolarWinds Bandwidth Gauges to get a visual indication of switch traffic that reads SNMP traps. If you are looking for network traffic you'll need to check your switches and less on the PC side. Larry is right though, you can use Cisco Network Assistant to monitor your SNMP traps if you are using Cisco.
