What is best way to remove duplicate files

I have a hard drive that has numerous duplicate files. E.g. certain documents are under My Documents, but also under my music, and also in other place. I want to remove the duplicate, but retain the most recent file. Also, if a duplicate is removed how can I be sure it is removed from the place I'd like, e.g. in the above example I'd like it removed from my music as it is a Word document. What is the best software to accomplish this?

Personally....
I use WinMerge, which is a free download. It allows you to look at two folders, side by side, and see if files are indeed identical, different, newer, older, etc... You can then select one file, either left or right side, and delete it. You can also copy a file from left to right or right to left, then delete the one you don't want.

Just remember.... don't go getting too rambunctious and delete critical system files. ONLY delete documents and/or music/movie files. We don't want to see you back here asking how to restore system files you've 'accidentally' deleted. wink

Best software is actually hardware ...
That hardware is you right mouse button.

Right click the offending duplicate within Windows Explorer, and select 'delete'.

Be careful though!

Don't get carried away and start deleting all the other 'duplicate' files that you come across, like system files.

You could delete a duplicate system file and the computer will continue to run, giving you a false sense of having cleared some wasted space. UNTIL THE NEXT TIME TO POWER UP! When you will then find the computer fails to start because of a start-up file that is now missing. wink

find duplicate files
I also faced the problem of duplicate files that create a mess in my computer.
I should say there are quite a few good tools to check for duplicates on the web. From the applications I tried, Advanced Duplicate Finder showed to me the most wanted result and stability work.

Best software for duplicate files!
ive been using this nifty little program called Advanced System Optimizer to remove duplicate files on my PC.You can do that manually also but if you have huge no. of files then it can be cumbersome for some, it is for me. I am simply using Its Duplicate files remover. It allows me to add folders & drives on which I want to remove duplicates & i can chose the desired extension of files. You can simply download it from download.com using http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-System-Optimizer/3000-2094_4-10147659.html?tag=mncol

Try & share the experience with me!!

Duplicate Finder works well
I had the task of sorting through about 750,000 files, in about 16,000 folders, containing about 70,000 duplicates. The recommendation of checking each file with its duplicate in 2 side-by-side windows doesn't cut it.
Even a tool like Duplicate Finder takes a while to sort through that lot.
