Creating a dual boot system
One of my important applications won't run on my new Vista machine, and the software company can't provide a fix. I thought that I could use Partition Magic to divide my hard drive into two separate partitions, then install XP Home (I have a legitimate never used CD) on one of them and be able to boot into XP when I need to run that app. However, Symantec says that Partition Magic will not run under Vista. Is there any other way to accomplish this? I don't want to possibly mess up a new machine by trying to replace Vista with XP, I would rather have them both. Thanks.

Have you tried compatability mode
You can use your Vista DVD if you have one or download and create this Recovery CD you will be able to use Diskpart to manipulate your Partitions. Be aware that you may have Hidden Partitions and be careful not to erase them. Use the guide below to shrink the drive. Make sure that you have created your Vista Recovery DVD before attempting this. Follow the directions below and you should be good to go.
The Windows Vista Recovery CD can be used to Boot your PC. Check your BIOS settings to make sure that you are booting from the CD first.

Download from here:

Boot from the CD and on the first screen click Next, click Repair your computer, click Next and select Command Prompt.
Type in DISKPART and press Enter. This opens the Microsoft DiskPart application. You need to select the active disk, so type in:
list disk
The primary disk is generally Disk 0, so type in:
select disk 0
Now we need a list of volumes on this disk, so type in:
list volume
In this case Volume 0 is the one we want, so type in:
select volume 0
Now type in:
shrink
DiskPart will go off and reclaim as much of the drive as it can ? you should get at least 50% of the space back.
Now type
EXIT
Boot with your XP CD and install.

Run XP as a virtual machine under Vista.
Microsoft VirtualPC 2007.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/virtualpc/default.mspx
Create a virtual machine, install XP in the virtual machine and install the application.
That way you can run XP while Vista is still running and don't ahve to reboot.
**If you have a brand name computer.
Find and use the "Create Recovery Disk" utility, BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE.
If something goes wrong you can reload to Vista Factory installation with it.
If you wait untill something goes wrong, you're only option may be wating for the OEM to send you one in the mail, if you can get it.
Edit:
Or VMWare Server
