Windows XP Pro Boot Error UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
My windows XP Professional will not boot up in any mode - I have tried all the safe modes, normal mode and last good config mode it just reboots over and over. I disable the auto reboot and go the blue screen showing UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME STOP: 0x000000ED (0x823DCA20, 0x0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000. I do not have a windows start up cd. I am not sure what caused this,it is my sons computer, possibly some program he downloaded? Any way to fix it? Thank you...

I found a site on microsoft to download the start up disc on floppies - are these the ones I need? I was going to download from my laptop and then load into his desktop but I dont have floppy - can I use a flash drive do you think? This is the site with the download,

The Windows Vista Recovery CD can be used to Boot to a Command Prompt where you can run these Commands.
Boot from the Vista CD and on the first screen click Next, click Repair your computer, click Next and select Command Prompt. Type in chkdsk c:/r and Press Enter.
Watch the screen for anything that may indicate Bad Sectors. If it finds Bad Sectors you should consider backing up the Drive and replacing it.
It does'nt matter if the Default OS is XP it can still be used on XP PRO or Home.

MS has made DaRT 5 (ERD Commander renamed) a free trial download. It may be of great help to you.

thanks for the advice - I tried both and my problem now is that the computer is not reading the CD (I guess that wasn't working before) so it wont boot from the CD - can I use a flash drive somehow?

You'll need a working optical drive. I don't think ERD Commander can be run from a flash drive. You can Google to see if it's been done.
Have you checked boot sequence to ensure CD drive is first boot device?
Sooner or later though, you'll need an operable CD drive. Might as well go ahead and install one.
