Cannot connect to the internet.

I recently wiped out my Dell Dimension 1100 and got everything in order except for my modem. I couldn't find the reinstall disk for it, so I used a friend's laptop to download the drivers I needed directly from Dell's website.

I can't connect to the internet still. I have a cable modem that should automatically connect since it's on at all times. I don't know what to do since I don't have the money to have a tech look at it.

Can someone give me an idea of a solution?

RE:cannot connect to the internet
Go to the vendor?s site for your cable modem and download the latest driver/software packages.

Does your cable modem connect directly to your PC or to a switch? If it connects to you PC directly does it connect via USB or Ethernet?

If your Cable modems is connected to your PC via a USB cable you should see an additional network connection in your network adapters control panel, if not it isn't installed properly.

Open your hardware device manager page and see if there are any deive's that show an unknown device or any device's that aren't working correctly.

If there are some that aren't correctly installed or are unknown you might find that it's your cable modem, so you'll need to uninstall/re-install it.

Try to install this driver
http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R105786.EXE

This is the link to the driver for the Intel network card relating to dell dimension 1100.
Download and install this driver.

You network card should work by now. If the internet is not available still,

Got to network connections, select the ethernet connection or the local area connection. Right click on it and select properties. In the listbox, select Internet protocols(TCP/IP) and click on properties again.

Make sure you have entered the settings given by your internet service provider(ISP)in the relevant feilds if they have given you one. You should find them in the booklet given to you or the ISP's technical support will help you if you had lost these details.

If not, make sure that you select the options "obtain an ip address automatically" and "obtain dns server address automatically" and click "ok".

This should fix the problem. If it still has a problem, post it on the forum again.

Thanks.

Check firewall settings first of all.

Try this
Unplug your cable modem.
Disconnect the coaxial cable and the cable going to your computer.
Connect the power back to the cable modem (for about 30 seconds).
Unplug your cable modem again.
Connect the computer cable and the coaxial cable, then plug the modem in.
You should now be able to connect to the internet (after all the lights cycle and indicate ready status).

A lot of cable modems lock into the initial system and need to be flushed.

After checking all suggestions made until now, check also Windows Services:
-DHCP Client
-WebClient
-Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Try starting the first (start it and set it to auto), reboot modem and PC and try internet.
And the second...
And the third...

Helped me in more than 10 cases.
