Vista64 Premium Sp2 install trouble 0X80004005

Help with Vista64 SP2
Hi
Asus Maximus Extreme, Q6600, 4Gig, ATI X1900GT, Haupauge HVR2250
I cannot get Vista64 Sp2 to complete. It gets to step3 100% then fails with 0x80004005.
I have Vista64 Home Premium on its own drive. I have never cloned the drive or have any other boot sectors.
I have disconnected all external devices and the internal secondary drive.

I have tried several fixes found on line. One of which did fix my Backup, which would error when I first tried it. This should not be called Backup. It only backs up the Files and Folders not your Programs.

I have tried Safe mode and have tried doing update and repair which both say I cannot do this. I have done a chkdsk, fixmbr and fixboot. I have tried working with MS and they have given up and said do a clean install. Easy for them to say.

I figure with all the techs that look at this site, one of you must have a fix.

------------------------------------------

THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR SUGGESTIONS. I AM GIVING UP AND DOING A CLEAN INSTALL TODAY.

I HOPE EVERYONE RAISES ENOUGH ISSUES THAT MS GIVES EVERYONE WITH VISTA A FREE UPGRADE TO W7.

A COMPANY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO TREAT THEIR CUSTOMERS LIKE THIS.

A little more info
Can you give us the full error message? Is it a Windows product Activation error? Or more like E_FAIL (0x80004005)?(The second one sounds more likely.) Do you have any other bootable drives connected? Disconnect them.

BTW, you can't really back up programs, ever, but you can image the entire drive.

Yes it is the E_FAIL (0x80004005).
As I stated in my post all external and internal devices and drives have been removed. I also found a way in Tech Republic to show all device drivers, even ones not in use. I went in and deleted all these. It is amazing what builds up in there from your camers and jump drives.

I think you can backup your programs with Ultimate. You may call it a disk image but it is different than the other vista backups.

Thanks for the response.

Did you try this

Hi
No I have not tried that. I did try to use Programs and Features to remove Sp1. It said it could not remove all of it. It still shows in my system info and everything still works the same, and Sp2 will still not install. I will look through the information on the link and try some of them. I am not hopful as it seems to me I have read Sp1 can not be removed, but I could be wrong.
Thanks for the response.

just the remnants of SP2.

Only
Windows Vista Business
Windows Vista Ultimate
Windows Vista Enterprise
will let you take a Backup of your Drive.

A couple of suggestions here

Windows Vista SP2 Won?t Install: Fixes

Hi
I tried those suggestions from the link previuosly.
The CheckSUR comes back clean. I have tried selective startup, even tried disabling everything in Services and Startup.
My Computer would not do a Repair from the disk. All of the Test completed sucessfully with 0X0 and the Operating system booted sucessfully.
But it said.

"You have recently attached a device to this computer such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restart your computer. If you continue to see this message contact your system admin or computer manufacture."

As you see from my posts I have removed all devices and even the Disk drivers in Device Manager.

I have not had time to look at those othe link suggestion on MS site.

Do not give up I know someone will find a fix.
Thanks
Kerry

It works the same for XP and it will take a bit of time to work through.

Get rid of old device drivers hidden in Vista

Jacky Howe 24th Jun 2009
HI Jacky
Did that originally thinking it would help. But it did not. I had disconnected my other internal drive and printer but did not remove the drivers.
I tried completely removing my scanner and printer and second drive and redid the unused driver removal but it still did not help.
Thanks for the thought. It has to be able to be fixed without a reload. I bought another drive to clone my "C" on in case I have to do a clean install. After I get Sp2 in and my Studio in I am going to clone it and save it for W7 which may be another fiasco. Studio is the biggest headach to reinstall since it is an upgraded version with a lot of extra graphics disks. If it were not for Studio I would probably just wipe it and start over.

Thanks

of acronis

anyone that's serious about having the ability to restore their systems, even to completely different hardware, should look into acronis true image w/universal restore
computechdan 26th Jun 2009
Hi
Yes Acronis is great, I have Acronis True Image Home. For my needs it works fine. The problems created by Vista are not the normal trouble a person runs into. You can tell this by looking on the web for the same error I am trying to fix. Having a complete backup of a OS that will not be fixed by the manufacturer is not normal. Something is telling the Sp2 update that another drive has been added. OK then there should be a fix to go into the registry and remove the misinformation.

MS is dropping the ball on this and putting the blame on the customers. MS created this mess and they should straighten it out.

Thanks for the input.

but Backup the Keys before you delete them.

Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrative credentials.
Click Start, click Run, type regedt32 in the Open box, and then click OK.
Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\USBPRINT

Right-click the Key that is associated with the printer and select Delete.

eXample:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USBPRINT]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USBPRINT\Hewlett-PackardHP_LaserJet_P1005]

You would be deleting Hewlett-PackardHP_LaserJet_P1005 which will show up under USBPRINT.

You will also find a reference in ControlSet001 and ControlSet003

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet001\Enum\USBPRINT]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet003\Enum\USBPRINT]
Jacky Howe 25th Jun 2009
I wish that was the answer. It looked promising when I saw where you were going.

I do not have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\USBPRINT in any of the Controle Sets.
I logged in under Administrator.
But while I was there I noticed a HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\Storage\Volume . When I looked in it there were several USB devices that I had removed the drivers for and reference to my printer. I backed that up and tried to delet them but access denied and it errored out. I tried going into Properties and changing ownership but it still denied letting me delet them.
I do not see a way to post a Screen shot to show what they look like. But the USB devices in there have ??? in their description.
Still looking.
Thanks

like it is referencing VistaSP1. Did you have problems with the SP1 install as well.
Jacky Howe 28th Jun 2009
HI
No. But I tried the Sp2 Beta and it did the same as the present problem. It got to step3 100% then reverted back. Except my Updates got messed up ans said Sp2 completed but my System info said Sp1 installed. Frank from MS worked with me getting my files straightened back up. So it is probably MS fault this is the way it is. I know I will never try a beta again except on a Clone disk.
How did you come to your conclusion. I sent this to the MS trouble tech who was helping me and she never addressed this issue.

Thanks
Kerry
