windows xp logs off immediately after loggin in

Upon logging into windows xp [home], system logs out immediately afterwards; no matter which account used

have you tried jumping into safemode to investigate what is going on?

fix automatic logoff and login error
You can try one of two things to start with.

Try booting into safe mode
On starting your pc hold down the F8 key you should be taken to a menu to boot in safe mode.
When you get to the logon screen select the Administrator account.

If you cant do that take you Hard drive out and put it in your mates pc or another pc if you have one and transfer the files that way.

These will only work If your hard drive is not faulty.

One thing to do in Safe Mode, if you can get there.
Insert the Windows CD go to Start\Run and type in sfc.exe /scannow

SFC is a System File Checker designed to replace any system files that are corrupted or accidentally deleted. The drawback to that command is that you need a Windows disk for your pc and not manufacturer's system restore discs.
