Server Management

Many of you for sure have lot's of servers to look after. I would like to know how you do this management.
I wonder if there is a tool where I can centralize all my server and check the Event viewer to checkt their status without having to get into all of them on by one.

Any tips, experience sharing?
By the way all servers are on Windows OS and One is on Linux Distro (not very important on this one)

Remote Desktop Connection
Would Remote Desktop Connection be good enough? That's what I use, but my network is small, 6 or so servers.

I have 15 servers and I still RDC. I do use visionapp's remote desktop product though to make the RDC sessions easier.

I agree with RDP and I do use it now. But I have around 17 servers and majority are serving aplications. I wonder if there would be a way of checking the Events in centralized way.. So that you dont have to remote to all of them to check if their health is ok.

Solarwinds has a suite of nice products, but they are expensive, but the Kiwi syslog viewer is free and does exactly what it is supposed to. I use it to monitor a number of devices.

Another tool you may want to look into is called the dude

Spiceworks
I rely on spiceworks quite a bit - http://www.spiceworks.com/. Its a great software and its free.

I look after approx 120 servers so the inventory function on Spiceworks is useful as I have a lot of the information on spiceworks without having to connect to the server. Also great for things like monitoring drive space. I have set it to email me whenever a a drive has less than 10% free space. Lots of other great features.

I use ipswitch. Its not free but if your like me, i moniotr ram, cpus, hdd, and services.

I used spiceworks a while back and i found it good but always found it NOT able to do more. for instanse i wanted to monitor servies and it it detects a specific servies has failed, try to start it.

so i moved to ipswitch and they have been able to do all that i needed. i monitor about 600 servers.

Thanks alot for the input. I will definetly try them out. Didnt had chance yet sad

I do not have so many servers as you guys.. way far from that. I look after around 17 servers more and less.. and I thought it would be a pain to look at them one by one:P that is also because this is not my main function therefore the idea of having email alerts is very attractive.

I normally want to monitor services and Events

I use Overseer.

Very affordable and super easy to use.

You can monitor up to 50 devices for only $50.

Some suggestions.
You could use log parser to pull the required event logs to a central database on schedule and then generate html files from the resulting data centralising critical events to an Intranet page.
Log parser can output to a number of different formats and you are only limited by time and imagination.
Alternately you could create a custom MSC console that covers the servers you wish to manage if you want to do it with a gui for free.
I have not used this but it looks like it may do what you require.

This may help as well.

We use rdp for server remote
management but for server event log, errors, warnings, hardware log, network logs we use EVENTSENTRY (http://www.eventsentry.com)

The good thing about this software is that it can be configured on Windows box with SQL server. It can gather log from linux servers, routers, switches, firewalls, and for sure windows servers.
