Installing MS Office already on PC
I have bought a new PC, with XP installed and a lot of files copied from my old PC. Whenever I try to read a Word file I get asked if I want to install Office and asked what my key is. I do not know the key. I am told one has to buy it from MS; however, my inspection of the MS site shows how to buy via download and what to do with a CD, but not how to get a key for installation when the product already resides on the PC. Can anyone read the MS site better than I can?

Unless you really need to give Microsoft money you could try OpenOffice.org's free office suite. It won't open MS Office's latest files but it will work with everything up to Office 2007. MS Office can open OO.o's files.

it might be a trial copy
installed on your pc...when trial period is expired then it constantly prompt you to put valid key...
If you want to see if it is vaild copy with a key then install Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html).
It can create a pc profile (html file) which shows all (most of them) software installed and their keys...

Belarc gives me 2007 Office in a list, but no key. When I type in another key I get an immediate message that I have it wrong.

Are you saying that Office 2007 shows up under the Software Licenses heading in Belarc and doesn't have a license key next to it? I'm interested to know because that would be something new to me about Belarc.

"If you cannot find the product key for your trial version, you have to purchase a full version of the product." There is a link to a section about finding a trial-version product key, but the link does not work. I have installed with a blank product key, and that should give me 20 uses. An annoying thing is that I already have Word 97 installed, but 2007 seems to take precedence.

When you buy a copy of M$ Office either by buying a CD or Downloading
A copy direct from the M$ Web Site you get provided a Product key on the Packaging or in the case of a Downloaded copy M$ send you a E-Mail with the Product Key.
Your description of your computer sounds like you have a 60 Day Trial Copy of Office 2007 and that it has either expired or that when you try to open a Document from a previous version of Word it is attempting to verify a legit copy of Office is installed.

Probably a trial copy.
The product key is most likely for a trial version of Office and not a full version.
Most "just bought" PCs come with an evaluation copy of Office, but you have to pay for the full version.
