sudden shut down safe mode only
OK Toshiba satellite laptop running Vista 2 GB DDR2...when I run a scan using malwarebytes or SAS or Avira or Spydoctor, laptop suddenly shuts off and does not reboot, in safe mode only, in normal mode, it all runs just fine. Multiple scans and hijack this reveal nothing abnormal.

It won't reboot in Safe Mode, but it will reboot normally?
If it won't boot in Safe Mode, the Safeboot registry key may be corrupted, but even importing a known good key may not help. Especially if there is a malware issue which is killing your anti-malware apps.
It could be a non-related issue entirely, though. Check your all your Event Logs for clues.

Have you ran updates or a check disk?
Updates and check disk may help. It sounds like your OS may be a little off, which could have been from an infection.
You could also try system file checker.
