What is 'best' way to marry Win7 x64 and XP

Since there seem to be a few options, what is the most performance efficient (smallest hit to Windows 7 performance) option for getting access to those old XP (and older) applications on a windows 7 64bit 8g system?
Are two separate computers necessary in order to have zero decrease in performance?
