windows xp wont start
Okay, I am trying to repair a computer with a windows xp home edition installed on it. When i hit the start button it starts and gets the screen where you can choose which account to log on to. You click on the account and it looks like its going to start but then its says saving your settings and goes back to the previous screen. I tried to start in safe mode and I get the same result. I tried last known working configuration and doesn't work. I tried booting from the xp installation disk and tried to repair. And still no luck. I thank you in advance for any assistance you can give.

Have you tried a different account?
Try logging in as Administrator and see if that works. You should be able to fix any other account from the Admin account.

I did try another account and as the administrator and still no go. As soon as it starts to load it immediately goes thru the logging off procedure: it says (saving your personal settings etc.)

A Rescue Disc may clean the system but just as likely you may be stuck with a Wipe and Reload as well.

If you need to wipe the HDD either Boot & Nuke from DBan
http://www.dban.org/download
Or Killdisc will do the job quite nicely

While Boot & Nuke does a better job Kill Disc may be easier to use with your system particularly if a SATA HDD is involved. Both are Free so it wouldn't hurt to get them.

You will need to use a boot CD or slave it to another system and load the hive.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Should read;
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,.
