Considering purchase of a netbook to have something "thin and light" for email/web use around the house & to take notes at college using Microsoft OneNote.
However, would also like to "remote desktop" into my higher-end Windows 7 machine to run more demanding apps. For example, would love to sit on the sofa with netbook & be able to "remote desktop" into my "main" PC in home office, and run apps such as Photoshop Elements, MS Excel, or Family Tree Maker.
Is this realistic with a netbook? Don't want to spend several hundred dollars for a glacially slow machine...just b/c it's thin and light.

Probably not as the apps that you want to run like Photoshop are very CPU Intensive.
NetBooks just don't have the processing power and you'll need one running Windows so that's limited to XP Home of 7 Starter and they are very basic particularly the 7 version.

With remote desktop, the heavy applications will be running on the server.
But RDP in between the user and photoshop may inject an irritating delay. (In order to get rid of a cable and free up a USB port, I recently obtained a bluetooth mouse. Works fine, but sometimes the delay from mouse to application is too much. If I were a gamer, I'd have retired that mouse immediately...)
And with much smaller screen resolution?
And, does the starter edition have an RDP client?
EditAdd: And I believe starter edition is a monotasking environment. If you, like me, are used to juggle several applications, provide remote support, look up passwords on the side, copy&paste here&there, then the netbook experience could feel intimidating.

What I intended to convey was that even if you could RDP into the main computer from a NetBook when it was running a Highly CPU intensive application like PhotoShop the connection to the NetBook would be slow and the Screen Resolution not to mention the actual display way too small and the quality of the display would leave a lot wanting. Even if a External Monitor was plugged in a NetBook display resolutions are way below that of a desktop or Note Book Computer.
Also as 7 Starter is not a Multitasking Environment there will be issues with what it is capable of doing.
However having said that there is a person here who is claiming that their NetBook which originally came loaded with XP Home is running 7 Ultimate exceptionally well. Here I suppose it all depends on what the user finds acceptable but the performance would be way down on even a low end Note Book let alone compared to a reasonably powerful desktop.
