As a new question. I recently tried to wipe my drive (after backing up!) and the computer booted up wonderfully...
Until I did a windows update and restarted it... and it gave me the black screen at the login just as it did before. Now, I am definitely blaming Windows 7. Does anyone know if this is a common occurrance?

Not sure about occurrence....
1) Can you boot into Safe Mode?
2) WHAT update(s) was it?
3) What was last thing done before the update? Driver install maybe (guessing)?
It's hard to just say, "oh yes, I had an issue with a blank screen after Windows Update, when the running of Windows Update wasn't the problem, it depends on the update(s)/fixes applied/changed.
This is more or less like retracing your steps. Aside from the update, was anything else done between boot up and the update?
Sorry if I'm reiterating the same thing over and over again.

I didn't install anything, I remember waiting until the restart to update my drivers for my card. Other than that, it's one of the 150 updates I got, I am fairly sure.

if so, do a system restore to before the updates being installed. also, when you installed the updates did you also install any of the hardware, optional updates? have you checked the logs?
