Why did my wmv & mpg files used to play but now most of them wont?

How can I play my wmv and mpg video files that I have downloaded on my PC. I have windows XP and downloaded these files years ago and they all seemed to work fine. Now most of them do not even show the video in my folder, it only shows the wmv or mpg icon.I have paid money to download these movies off of websites and now they don't work can anybody help me solve this problem so I can view all of my videos again.

Thank you

Download codecs or a codec pack
like K Lite. The files may depend on codecs which don't ship with the current versions of whatever media player you are using. Or, maybe the player & codecs aren't up to date. Third option: media player is broken; uninstall then reinstall. Or try a different media player.

Fourth option: Maybe it's DRM, and you're screwed unless someone else has cracked that particular type of DRM and made the crack generally accessible.

vlc playertry vlc player
download and install vlc player.
download and install the "combined community codec pack"

if you have paid money to download these videos, they might have a propietary codec, in that case you have to check with the place from where you downloaded from.
