I have an old Motorola Sufrboard cable modem connected via USB to an old desktop. Can I use the Ethernet connection on the same modem to also connect simultaneously to an new wireless laptop ?? thanks.

Wireless router.
If you are trying to setup a wireless connection, you will need a wireless router of some sort. Your cable modem will have a Ethernet connection going out, and sometimes a USB connection as well, which it sounds like you have. The cable modem is only going to give out one IP Address.

You will need to invest in a wireless router of some sort. I would recommend a linksys or netgear, just make sure that you read up on how to secure them properly, or have someone help you out. If I am not mistaken, most of the new routers will come with a help disc that walks you through it, so it should not be that bad for you.
