I know it has been a while... I am wondering if you were able to resolve this issue. I am in a similar situation where I have an existing workgroup network of several XP machines, one of which is XP Pro and an existing Vista machine. My printer is on the XP Pro and everyone can access the device. I added a new Vista machine and cannot access the shares or the printer. Like you, I keep getting prompted for a user / password when I attempt to access the XP Pro shares or printer from the new Vista machine. Also, like you, I have Virtualbox installed on the Vista machine. The Vista machine has no problem accessing the XP Home machines, only the XP Pro. Thanks.

Ouch Did you post a bug on the Microsoft site?Do you have any Win7 machines? I think mine mysteriously started working after an upgrade or Windows security patch, but I also upgraded one of the PC's a while back, so I can't test now.But - back to the error, when you got the login popup, what does the security event log say? If it doesn't say anything, you'd need to turn auditing on of course.== John ==

It looks like this only works intermittently. And it can allow or stop access at any time for any reason, or no reason. I was copying a directory from XP to Vista, it got about halfway through the copying and then suddenly popped up and asked me to login. Of course the login didn't work and doing Net Share didn't work. Rebooted, still nothing, tried to do a print to the printer on XP about an hour later and that worked. Then I finished copying the directory over. Strange stuff!

Well, I could have sworn I tried the net use ip address method before and failed, but .... drumroll please .... It worked!! I did "net use v: //192.168.0.4/Sharename" and it connected no problem! Tried connecting through explorer after that but still couldn't get that to work. I checked the event logs and there is absolutely nothing in any category (security or anything else) showing any kind of error when trying to connect to XPS210 through Explorer. So, at least I can access files. Now does anyone know how I can access the shared printer?

I had a similar problem once with a Vista machine to an XP share. My setup was slightly more complicated, but I found if I used the IP address instead of the symbolic name it would work every time. Oddly, the XP machine could setup a share to the Vista machine symbolically so I usually just copied the other way around.I later upgraded to Win7 on both machines and it all worked. I feel for you - there's a bug floating around here. The O/S should say something. I assume you checked the security logs in the event viewer for clues?== John ==

Well, that didn't fix the issue ... but at least I got to change the Organization Name! So there was an upside to that test. Here's another new thing to consider. I installed VirtualBox on the Vista machine with XP running on that. Set the Network Adapter to "Bridged" inside VB and that XP connects to every other machine just fine.So it seems to me that there are no hardware issues involved here. There's just something on this Vista installation that isn't allowing it to connect to 1 out of 6 XP installations.

I've seen a smilar problem with Vista to XP, but I've upgraded machines since then.I hate it when people say to reinstall the O/S. A good many times I see the same problem come back. And if it fixes something, how do you know what was fixed? Our ASP does thsi all the time with email performance problems and it "Fixes" it for that day, but then the next day the performance problem comes back. Fix the real problem.Anyway, with my Vista machine I changed from sharing with the name to sharing with IP address and it worked. I opened up a bug on technet but of course got no real response. I also tried all the tricks above or most of them - now I'm on Win7 on all machines so I can't verify.Try the IP address trick and see if that works.== John ==
