PMP Certification Worth it?

If you want a job as a project manager it is. I'd say roughly 90% of the PM job postings I see these days have the PMP cert as a requirement. Of course, you don't really need the cert to do project management, but it is a barrier to entry much like a college degree.

On the plus side many companies will help you get the cert and the PDUs to keep it. If they are going to require it, then they should provide this support.

As you have seen, the PMP requires a sizable and on-going investment of both time and money. Unless project management is something you really want to do, I wouldn't bother with it. It's far too costly for a simple resume bullet.

If you are in the field and want to advance or are serious about a career in Project Management, then it's pretty much required. Employers are looking for the certification as an indication of what they can expect from you in a PM role.

I agree with the above two posters...depends on your career goals and if you are interested in Project Management, being certified really helps (especially in areas like government consulting).

I agree with the above responses, and would like to add that you will also notice an icrease in you earnings, and more calls from headhunters.

To move up the corporate ladder, to see projects prosper, and to solidify job security, a PMP certification helps a great deal. PMP certification will give instant credibility and your boss will not be hesitant to give you a bigger project. You will almost be guaranteed a raise with your certification. Having the certification is definitely going to help attract clients.

I can say this my friend because I am PMP certified and have enjoyed these benefits. Do not have second thoughts about this exam and register yourself in a good provider to get your 35 contact hours.

Not all of our current project managers are certified. If you are in a PM role currently (and you are supposed to have 5 years of PM experience to take the test), then it may not help you.

On the other hand if you are applying for a PM job at another company, its pretty standard to have it as a requirement.
