how can i remove a virus from an external hard drive?

i have a recycler on my external drive and my antivirus cannot detect it. how do i remove it without formatting the drive

Boot with an alternate OS
Such as UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD) or any Linux distro. Use this to copy drive contents somewhere else, verify that you have a good backup, then reformat the drive.

Beware if your AV cannot detect the virus you've got, it may infect the computer you have it plugged into.
