hi
i have a windows xp service pack 3 hp desktop and another dell laptop running windows 7 ultimate. i want to create an ad hoc network to access files and printer.
i created a network in my desktop , enabled ics(internet connection sharing) and connetcted my laptop. now my laptop can access the internet but i can neither see my laptop in netwrk places(of the desktop) nor can i see my desktop in the network places of the laptop . And i have enabled file sharing and all in my laptop. and installed net bios and nwlink ipx protocol in the desktop.and laptop is ONLY connected to my ad hoc network. i connect to the internet via my dektop using ethernet port.
pls help !!!

Adjust windows Firewall Settings
Default setting is 'no exceptions' which does not allow local networking to work.
Unless you have a Novell Netware server, you do not need or want nwlink ipx protocol.
The main things you need is the 'file and print sharing for microsoft networks.
Note that the two devices need to have the same workgroup name. The default in XP is 'workgroup', but not sure about Win7.

i know about the workgroup thing .. both are the part of 'workgroup'.
i use avg 2011 and windows firewall is disabled. can you suggest all the services / protocols and any other thing that i should allow or add to trusted list of my firewall?

ICS changing you IP
HI, the issue might be due to the fact that you have enabled ICS, which when enabled for the first time changes your Ip for the network, so your IP would most probably not be the same IP pool of the LAN, therefore I suggest you manually change your IP to an available ip on your lan, let me know if this helped,

i dont understand y u want me to me to change the ip address of the pcs. i can see that both are having different ip address , have the same subnet mask and are part of the same workgroup. n what do u mean by "the same ip pool of lan"?

you standard IPs should be like 192.168.1.1 and onwards unless you specified otherwise. the default IP set by windows when ICS is enabled is usually is 192.168.137.1, so change this IP to be in the same class as your LAN, therefore the first three numbers of the IP should be the same( eg: if your other two computers have a IPs such as 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 then put your ICS enabled computers IP in the same class with an IP of anything with 192.168.0.)

Put all your pcs in same network range
Hi
Have you tried checking the IP address of all systems make sure they are in same IP range, and then try to ping each if ping is succsusful , then you will be able to access other systems.

win 7 XP
Win 7 is not backward compatible with printer sharing with XP.
I got a win 7 machine to share it's printer with multiple XP machines.
Look at the security tab in win 7. See if anything is blocking access.
I would even try to set up the home network on the win 7 and have it share with the XP.
Check the name of the user and password that will share on the win 7, you need that to password into XP to share.
I know this is confusing, but I had a real time setting up the printer sharing.
I don't know if any of this helps.
