My space bar isn't working in recovery console. Is there something I'm missing when typing in commands or should I just hook up a plug n play keyboard?

No idea why that would be.
Is this the OS that shipped originally with the Dell? If so, the space bar should work. Still, I can't imagine a missing driver situation where everything works but the space bar.
What you can do, since you went through the trouble of posting it here, is drop all of that into a text file and name it with a .bat extension (e.g., regfix.bat). Put it on a thumb drive or otherwise make it available - if you can copy it to the drive you are working on in a directory accessible from recovery console, that would work. It would have to be the starting directory, I guess, since you cant type a space after cd to change a directory. Then you could just type regfix.bat, and it will run. (Or x:\regfix.bat if on a flash drive, x being whatever drive letter is assigned to the drive.)
edit: You can always try holding this upside-down and blowing into the keyboard to make sure nothing is under the space bar. Since you haven't explicitly noted that the space bar worked fine during a normal startup immediately prior to running the RC, I imagine it could be dust or a broken keyboard.

does the spacebar work other areas?
hi does the spacebar work in the bios? in the regular OS, on a bootable Live cd? if all those answer to No, get a new keyboard if cleaning the spacebard doesnt resolve it.
If it does work in all the above, then theres a driver issue (i really boubt, but who knows)
