Who writes this stuff?

I just received the "Windows Desktop" email this morning, titled
"A critical patch that cannot be ignored this month."

The email begins with "Microsoft should not try to control hardware vendors",
followed by "Introducing Microsoft Office 365".

Doesn't anyone at TR remember their "Journalism-101" class? The headline on the page (in this case Subject) should be the first story, front-page-above-the-fold? When something is your "lead story", it should be easy to find, not buried somewhere in the gray space.

Now that you mention it. The news here does just that. "When we come back" then they show you a teaser. So you wait thru the commercials and watch the next segment of the news which ends "When we come back"...

Not something I've seen the News do here unless it's a story subject to Court Action and the release has not come through by the close of the show.

But then again I don't watch the commercial chanel News or Gossip Programs that are supposed to be Current Affairs but offer nothing but Cross Promotion of other Programs or pathetic Opinion by vested interests. wink

Who white papers this stuff?
In a somewhat related vein, I am tired of being suckered into a white paper only to find it is a ruse to get you interested in someone's product. TR should be ashamed.
Am I the only one that feels this way?

Not at all. I've all but given up on the "White Papers" I let my filter send them to the Junk folder.

Me, too. I trash almost all the 'white papers' as ads in cheap sheep's clothing - I guess that's why they call them white papers.
RickGTOC 11th Nov 2011
Where have you been? All commercial white papers are exactly advertising. The term "white paper" was co-opted by business at least 20 years ago, and I've never seen a white paper here or anywhere online that wasn't advertising, outside of non-corporate scientific sites.

seanferd hit it on the head...I always associate white paper with science / information stuff so would always want to read it....only to find it's an advertisment.

I've always had to dig for the subject line reference.
Did they get better for a while? I've pretty much unsubscribed to most newsletters, and rarely read those to which I am yet subscribed.

But this is the second or third time this week I've seen "journalism" mentioned. There isn't any journalism here, so don't expect any. Although you'd expect that there must be someone with journalistic training working at TR, and that content producers might format and/or write their content better regardless. Most of the bloggers do write pretty well, though. And a great whacking chunk of professional journalists are really pretty awful.
