How do I recover a username and password?

I was fixing my cousin's Compaq mini 110, because it got a virus and wouldn't come on. I downloaded the HP recovery and to my surprise it was a Linux operating system, even though I chose XP. She had no problem using the operating system, However, she has forgotten her username and password. How do I recover it from this system? Haven't had much practice on this operating system.

Short answer: You don't.
If you can't log in as root/superuser and reset the password, then reinstall.

You can boot off a live CD to copy off any user documents/files you'd like to save.

From where did you download this?

recover admin or user password
I have used a product from SpotMAU called 'PowerSuite 2009 Wincare' . They have a current year package. You can buy the whole Suite or individual peices. One is password genius. I used this to recover data off my sons pc. At the time it had XP on it. Check out the SpotMAU web site. They have a way to fix Windows or just recover data and reinstall to get rid of all the crap.

Seanferd answered this above:
Assuming that this is Ubuntu Linux, you boot off either a Ubuntu Live CD or flash-drive distro, back up your data, then it would probably be easier to do a reinstall than to walk your thru password reset on Linux.

root
The user name is "root".

Try with a blank password. Then try with "root" as the password.
