Or with another free virtual machine...
VMware Player, which can be downloaded here https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/evalcenter?p=player&q=vmware%20player%20download&ie=utf-8&sa=Search . It works on top of Windows and Linux, and like virtualbox allows cutting and pasting between OS's as well as rapid switching between OS's. I use it to run WindowXP on my Linux computer; of course it runs slower than the native OS.

I have not used the vmware player is several years. I am glad it is still around. VMWare player is also a great way to run a browser in a sandbox and protect your main computer from spyware.

Yes, It's Possible
Here's a link with instructions. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8057-dual-boot-installation-windows-7-xp.html
I assumed Win 7 and XP since you failed to specify the newer operating system.
Although it is possible, I don't recommend it unless absolutely necessary. In nearly all cases a virtual machine is preferable. XP Mode in Windows 7 is excellent if you have Pro or Ultimate.
