Is it me or are all the Verterians dropping TR?
Maybe its me, but i am noticing a lot of the veterans of TR and those who have had the best answers seem to be disappearing from TR. I feel like something toward the end of 2011 or beginning of 2012 changed at TR , especially in the Q and A section, not sure what it is, but I feel its less of a community and more of people posting random questions. Maybe i am just getting old...LOL (well i am but not that old)

Yep Mark you are an Old Fart
But you are correct after the last site downgrade the sense of community was shot to hell and there was an active movement to attempt to get people to join My Face and Book Space a while ago to get rid of the nuisance nontechnical posting here on TR.
Seems that many have taken to FB with a vengeance and while I do have 2 accounts there I see it more as a Major Security Breach and otherwise totally useless. FB is so secure that the 2 Accounts that I setup one for Private Family and one for Professional have been so throughly cross linked that it's not funny by FB itself and I currently have members of my family demanding to know who I am because I'm not Col even though I'm impersonating him.
Add-in Groupon or whatever the idiot place is called who hosts the Avatars which can no longer be animated and TR has taken quite a few backward steps and a lot of the people have simply left for greener pastures.
Of course making one of my Alter Ego's a Moderator didn't help them at all either.
@ this rate within a year or two TR will be reduced to answering Homework Questions and telling people how to Crack Passwords on Windows only systems.
Other than the FB Burfday Alerts that I get I haven't been back there for a very long time and currently I don't have any intentions of going back. I see FB as being as Useful as Teats on a Bull but maybe that's just me.

Col, you're braver than I am, I refuse to "join Facebook", I've spent
more time cleaning spyware and trojans from my kids computers
the past couple of years that are directly linked to Facebook.
But yes, our community is falling apart somewhat. Even when there
is a tech question, the OPs rarely give a vote up for help. And the
homework question just rile me up sometimes...I can't believe some
of the things those lazy arses ask!

Well I did look at FB for a couple of days.
However it wasn't my idea to join I had to for family reasons a cousin was under treatment for Cancer his wife was under treatment for a failed Hip which needed replacing and my Mommy didn't use a computer so I had to monitor FB to keep her up with the news.
Things sort of went downhill from there but it's Pitiful really and just a massive waste of time. About the only good reason to maintain my low presence there is to keep an eye on Attacks over it for the customers who think that it's great along with Music Downloads for their iPods from any number of Torrents.
All totally pointless if you ask me. If I log in once a month for 10 seconds that's Extremely High usage for me.
OH BTW Wiz my teacher didn't tell me how to answer this question and I've been a Rabid Student and can not answer this question so will you answer it for me?

Thank you for responding, The whole Facebook thig, im just not one to get on that bandwagon. Interesting story you have about you rFB experience. Even my company is making an internal FB like page so you can post what you do , etc during the day. Must be a generation thing, but i really dont have time to be futzing around posting what i do all day on soem web page. Time sheet work fine (and we are still required to fill those in too)

Good to know I'm not the only one who spurns FB as a security breach, I have started to use g+ though that may prove to be short lived as it also lacks some essential security.
As to pros leaving TR, it really isn't hard to see why. The last couple redesigns have been going backwards, while quality of content has gone downhill. I subscribe to several of the newsletters and find mostly repetitive links throughout them with an occasional original link, and many links go back to very old content it seems.
I'm not very active at TR or any of the other CNET properties, but have been a member of ZDNet since 1995. I can honestly remember when ZDNet was a valuable asset creating tools and other software along with writing reviews that actually had some meat to them.

Maybe they will come back one day.
Or we can get some new members?

I'd say you ignore their reasons for leaving at your peril. This was a great place to hang out and be a part of. We had a nice mix of technical and non technical conversations going on, and a real sense of community.

Not a vertarian
I am not a vertarian, except I am a long time subskiber.
Seriously though, I 'll try to contribute what I can. (15 years desktop/network/application support for large school district, so I may have seen it all)
So what's broken anyway?

Its just some of the questions coming in, they arent the same "real questions" and also i see quite a few "how to cancel my subscription" type questions, and also I see less responses from those that used to answer almost every post. (Probably because the questions (to me) seem very basic for a place where IT techs would be asking eachother for assistance) (maybe im wrong and TR wasnt meant as a IT forum?)

I don't know... I recently joined myself...
...primarily because the people posting seemed much more knowledgable than other communities I'd seen, (still a higher quality of answers overall).
Question... (and I've been here too short an amount of time to know); is it a matter of less veterans or a matter of more newbies? Perhaps it's an appearance of a problem caused by a change in the ratio?

It could be part of the issue, but some veterans really did leave. And others have passed away.

Interesting you noticed this
Been thinking the same thing... I've also seen cycles where folks are out of touch, then rotate back in. As Slayer_ pointed some have passed away. Glad to have been here long enough to read their banter...

My circumstance
Since the new platform was instituted, it has been very hectic. With lost loved ones and a deluge of troubles with car maintenence and a double whammy on a desktop and laptop, there really hasn't been much spare time. Generating two new systems for the network and making sure the users are up to speed with WIN7 takes more patience than time. I'm not going to make excuses. WHAT DID I MISS?

Just Too Dang Busy
Myself, I've just been too darn busy with other things and family.
I try to at least look over the Q&A at least once a week and will add to a thread if I feel I have something to contribute.
That said, the quantity and quality of the questions is not what it used to be either. I started cutting back about the same time as it looked like we were the primary resource for some out-sourced support desks.
