PC was infected by a virus, virus removed, trying to update and restore files. SP 1 will not install.
I've tried it from windows update, from a downloaded file, then install, I've removed the antivirus programs, disabled the firewall, and I am out of ideas. Anything else that I can try?

It may be time to start over completely,
by that I mean reformat your hard drive, and re-install Vista, then SP1, along with all
the other updates, plus the software you use. Hopefully you have a backup of any
important data???
You might try the repair option from your original Vista repair disc, then see if SP1
will install...but if that doesn't work, probably best to wipe and re-install.

try a repair install
if vista is currently the same version as the installation disk or download, then do a "repair installation", aka in place installation
the repair install will replace any corrupted or missing system files with genuine ones from the cd.
afterwards, re try sp1.update.
