Alternative to High Speed SD Flash memory card for Rasp PI

The High Speed SD Flash memory cards have a capacity of 32 GB. Kindly advise and explain, if possible, if an external USB hard drive of higher capacity can be used to boot the Rasp Pi from the Debian operating system. I would be most grateful for your kind help. Thanks and kind regards
Edmond

You have to boot from SD but a USB HD can ???take over??? after the initial boot. You cannot boot without an SD card.
