The model is a HP Deskjet 6110 All-in-One printer, scanner copier and fax.
A long time ago the automatic feed stopped working on the fax. That was ok, and I just used the glass top. A couple of months ago, I changed a printer ink cartridge and it had been acting strange ever since. The display always said to align cartriges, and I did that, but it did not print a test page just a blank one. It would still print ok from the computer. Then a couple of weeks ago it said to clean cartriges, and I did that, but it still did not work. It then did not do the scanner function and it would not print.

I hate to sound defeatist but
That same device goes for less than $100 new, and $29 used on eBay. HP even has a trade-in program. http://www dot hp dot com/united-states/tradein/home_flash.html

Unless there's a specific reason that you have to use this printer, I'm with robo_dev.
That said, you can try this: take the ink cartridge out and clean the contacts (not the nozzles!!). Also inspect the contacts in the ink cartridge carriers; clean if neccessary.

CARTRIDGES ISSUE
the problem is with the circuit on the cartridges....
try out new cartridges.
